Band Opening Letter 2009-2010


Dear Band Member,

Welcome to the 2009-2010 school year. We hope that your decision to participate in the Nagel Band Program is the beginning of a successful year of both musical and academic activities. By making the decision to participate, you have said, "Yes, I am willing to work hard to make my band successful!" This commitment involves a number of responsibilities.

Every band class at Nagel will be a journey through instrumental music and as with any journey, there are certain requirements for travel.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM A NAGEL BAND CLASS?

1. You can expect to be exposed to all types of band music. Each year we will study a variety of outstanding compositions from all periods of music history and many styles. You owe it to yourself to approach each composition with an open mind and heart, ready to discover what it has to offer.

2. You can expect to have different performing experiences. Each year the band performs three formal concerts in an academic year.

3. You can expect to improve your musicianship. We give regular attention to learning the skills of music reading as well as understanding various musical forms and styles.

4. You can expect improvement on your instrument. While band playing is not solo playing, many of the techniques and exercises taught in band are transferable. You will learn new techniques for your instrument and gain confidence.

5. You can expect us to emphasize the art of working together and caring for others. Playing in this band program is much more than teamwork: it's like being part of a family. Whether through daily rehearsals, performances or participation in solo & ensemble festival there is ongoing opportunity and expectation for your to improve your interpersonal skills.

Sure it's hard work. It takes discipline. But we think it's worthwhile, and we have fun at it. As with many things in life, you will get out of band in proportion to what you put into it.

REMEMBER: We are here to help you achieve your goals. Never hesitate to ask for assistance. As long as we communicate, this journey through instrumental music will be great!
